The popularity of the “selfie”, the self-taken picture, is raging over the Internet. I’m fascinated by what people put “out there” and why. With their hair all-askew, the camera angle up their nostrils, these “soon to be” executives rising in the corporate ladder, send their “good for a laugh” photos to all ends of the earth via the internet. The now common place “selfie” has captured the hearts of the internet users.
Moving away from this digital age with the influx of eBooks, back to the olden days of “hardbound editions”, you were considered an egoist if you published your own book. In the publishing world when you self-published a book it was referred to as the “vanity press”. Not these days.
We’ve come a long way in our society’s acceptance of the “self”. Along with the self-portraits and self-publishing, in this modern day of “self”, we see the fine art of “self love” on the rise. Loving yourself is a much-needed skill to survive.
Some might even consider loving yourself selfish. The word “selfish” suffers from a bad connotation, but in reality it’s a “must” for healthy living. Be selfish with your time, your energy and your concern.
Be greedy with your precious hours – limit the energy spent on email, texts, and phone calls. Take care of yourself, not just enjoying an occasional massage, but carve out daily quality time for exercise, meditation, or whatever feeds your physical and emotional health. You need time to renew, refresh, and reconnect.
Relationships can also rob your of your well being. Keep an eye on your circle of “friends”. Certain relationships can drain the energy right out your very being. Clean out the psychic “junk drawer” and encircle yourself with only those people that nourish and support you with “no guilt”. Healthy living is dependent on self love.
Remember the flight attendant’s admonition: If the aircraft loses altitude the oxygen masks will come down: PUT YOUR OWN MASK ON FIRST AND THEN TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHILDREN!
Learn to love yourself first, and then you will have something special to share with others.
We might even consider changing the commandment: Love yourself as much as you love others.

I just tried taking a “selfie” – the pop up read, “Google, take me to the nearest hair station”! Boy, these cameras are smart!
