In life we are given many choices along our journey. We can take the low road or choose the high road. It’s up to each of us.

Having recently moved into a new home I confronted these choices – literally. Our new home sits on a hillside, so in venturing out for my morning walk I can opt for the easily accessible low road. Or I could choose to put my climbing shoes in gear and take the higher road.

The low road calls out with comfort, familiarity, and relaxation. Just put myself in cruise control mode and walk. Enjoy!  In contrast the high road, is met with determination, sweat, and resolution.   I’m definitely in overdrive to make it to the top for this route. Work!

On the lower road we see beauty – towering trees, colorful flowers, and manicured lawns. But on the higher road, the view widens with perspective allowing for the vistas of spectacular.

So too in life, we can choose to react to situations presented to us in a normal way, oftentimes, the easier way to observe a particular set of circumstances or we can take the higher road.

In life the so-called higher road means that we get up out of our everyday minds to view things from God’s point of view. We see things in the larger perspective.

Working from this higher road, the important operating principle of gratitude flows more easily. Gratitude opens up new doors of understanding for us allowing us to appreciate the occurrences in our lives as invitations.

We find ourselves in various predicaments, not knowing the why behind them; but trusting in the higher good. If we can climb the higher road with gratitude seeing the circumstances from God’s point of view we will be better able to know that these situations are stepping-stones on our path.

We now see that there is no time with God, so all of our problems have been solved and all of our prayers have been answered. Knowing this allows for more gratitude and thanksgiving.

Thank you Lord, for these opportunities to learn. Thank you Lord, for answering my prayers for help

The low road only sees though the myopic human everyday lens, while the higher road of gratitude, appreciates the bigger picture from a more heavenly perspective allowing for the Grander Picture.

So put a smile on your face, lace up those walking shoes, and get ready to count your blessings engulfed in gratitude as you take in the panorama.
