Honesty        Our spiritual development blooms in the field of honesty. “It may not be the cruise we signed up for, but it’s the ship we’re on”,  (one of my favorite sayings) smacks us between the eyes asking us to assess our reality in blatant honesty.

Often times we tend to bury our heads in the sand, pretending that “it just isn’t so”. We may be kidding ourselves believing that “my child is OK” or “my family is normal”.  When truthfully these “notions” couldn’t be further from the truth.

Maybe the situation is too difficult to bear.  Perhaps if we were honest, we would have to take an uncomfortable action that we are not ready for.  Guilt, fear, or our need for security tends to keep us stuck in our “make believe” world.

We’ve all heard the term, “brutally honest”.  And that’s precisely how honesty can strike us, as “brutal”.  Looking squarely at a situation, can push us out of our comfort zones.  The honest demands of everyday living seem to be yanking us around like “madmen”, tossing us around like a ship on a stormy sea losing our bearing.

What can we do to be “anchored”, to stay afloat when it seems like the waves of life will come crashing down on us throwing us into uncharted waters?

When waves of doubt or despair come washing over you, take time to breathe reconnecting to your Source.  It’s in this vulnerability and openness that you will know the Truth.  Remember that you are being Divinely guided through this sea of the unknown and reassure yourself that this too shall pass in the cycle of growth.

It’s easy to fall into the trip of blaming others or playing the “if only” game. It is more comfortable and secure to look outside ourselves to name our problems.   But the key to using these situations as stepping-stones to something positive is to be honest with yourself.

You don’t have to admit it to anyone but yourself. Try small doses of honesty at first.  If you’ve been living as the “Queen of Denial” it may require baby steps.

Growth occurs at “bitter edge”. Taking a long hard honest look at a situation may push you out of your comfort zone.   This is where the real rewarding growth will happen. So inch up to honesty, no matter how difficult it may be, and the rewards will be surprising.
