February is the month dedicated to love with Valentine’s Day, the traditional day set aside to show someone how much we care for them. For the youngsters, little lacey “love-you” notes and sugary colored candy hearts with lovey messages reach out to others. For us older types we might enjoy Champagne, long-stemmed red roses or chocolate truffles.

But no matter what your age, how you celebrate, with someone or alone, you need to remember: love is to be celebrated as the foundation for everything.

These “elementary” sometimes, tacky, commercial valentines are a reminder of a much more important truth: that LOVE is the basis for life itself.

We’ve been taught that God Is love. So when we love we participate IN God, connecting with our true nature of being Divine ourselves.

Sometimes we get so busy, so caught up in our own agendas, our own pain or conflict that we choose to focus on something other than love. And we are truly missing out on what and who we really are. God breathed HIS life in us…love.

Robert Holden, one of my favorite authors, realizes that love has to be put first in his life so he has a screen saver on his computer as a daily reminder:

“First love, then think.

First love, then speak.

First love, then look.

First love, then act.

First love, then choose.

First love, then give.

First love, then live.”

Love is the true rock upon which we build our lives. The true purpose of each of our lives is found in Love…love in each situation, each person, and each decision that we make.

So let’s use this Valentines’ Day, and this month to refocus on how we love – how we express love in our lives, and how we receive love in our lives.

Let’s really put love first then everything else will fall into place.
