Do you sometimes feel disappointed in yourself, maybe even that you are a miserable failure at some things? Comparisons often make us feel like we have a big “L” pasted on our foreheads for “Loser”.

Look at our culture, rating, judging, and evaluating everything. We use terms like “top 10 football teams”, “five star hotels”, and “number 1 ranked golfer, tennis player, etc. reflecting how people, schools and teams are compared.

Our society is looking for “perfection” without giving us much leeway for “progress”. But this “pressure for perfect” is really not healthy for us, physically, emotionally,or spiritually.

Consider these wonderful words of Leonard Cohen:

Ring the bells that still can ring.

Forget your perfect offering.

There is a crack in everything.

That’s how the light gets in.

In reality we are all “cracked” not even coming close to perfection. We are even afraid to admit our humanness. Let’s shift our paradigm. Let’s view our shortcomings, our cracks and those of others as opportunities for Light.

Especially with this holiday season descending upon us bringing the stresses for the perfect holiday celebration, perfectly cooked dinner or perfectly behaved family. Let’s try to find God’s perfection in our imperfections.

In Japan, broken objects are often repaired with gold. The flaw is seen as a unique piece of the object’s history. This “golden flaw” only adds to the beauty.

So my challenge to you during these upcoming weeks is that we find the beauty in the flaws that surrounding us. Let’s use these situations as unique opportunities to LET OUR LIGHT SHINE!
