Sunsets captivate us, holding us flatfooted staring off into space waiting for God’s light show. People drop whatever they are doing turning their attention to the colorful display bringing daytime to an end. God’s paintbrush brings many lessons with it.

Why are sunsets so alluring? What spiritual lessons do they reinforce on a daily basis?

  • Sunsets enjoy the perfect balance of light and dark, reflecting the cycle in our own lives. The up and downs, the joy and sadness, the successes and failures, all resonating in the artful disappearance of the sun. Somehow the synchronicity of our lives settle us into a comfortable place giving us the “Everything is OK” feeling. Someone much BIGGER is really behind all this.
  • Sunsets remind is that precious time moves on. We cannot stop the sun from dropping below the horizon, nor can we freeze-frame our lives. Time slips away weather we enjoy it or not. We might as well enjoy each step along the way grateful for each breath that we take for granted.
  • Sunsets remind us that there are miracles around us every single day and minute if we would be mindful of them. Think of the nuclear reaction of a miracle in a simple sunrise happening every morning 93 million miles away that we miss. Our attention is on getting the day going, kids off the school, and items on the “to do list” to be checked off, pulling us away from this “routine miracle”.

So no matter how your days may come and go without trumpet acclaim, try to find the miracles surrounding you. There are miracles with messages out there…don’t miss them.
