Scottsdale Healthcare will be sponsoring “Unleash the Secrets to guilt-Free Living” presentation on March 19th, 5-7 p.m.
In my workshops and presentations I incessantly hammer home how damaging guilt can be emotionally, mentally, and physically. Now this is another opportunity for me to shout this important point out.
In this presentation, I will be collaborating with Terri Taylor, RD, hitting on the nutritional guilt, and Lisa Galper, Psy.D., highlighting how to win the freedom from our psychological obsessions.
Here are some highlights:
Sometimes people shy away from admitting their “guilt”, fearing to acknowledge they did something wrong. Given, they didn’t actually do anything wrong! They did they best they could so what’s there to feel guilty about?
But the fear of not being perfect, of trying to please everyone will lead to “guilt-avoidance” behaviors of procrastinating, performing, and pretending.
When we cut ourselves we naturally clean the wound and put a protective Band-Aid on it. We don’t hesitate to address the physical hurts. But when it comes to emotional, mental, and psychological injuries, we often times don’t admit them or shove them way down in our physical bodies, until too much stress takes a physical toll. The stresses stored deep in the cells of our body will erupt in some way.
Here are some of the symptoms to beware of:
MENTALLY you might worry too much, you may only see the negative side of situations, be indecisive, or have nightmares.
EMOTIONALLY you might have low self-esteem, experience extreme fear, apathy, or irritability.
PHYSICALLY you might have trouble sleeping, suffer from headaches, fatigue, skin irritations, weight gain, or muscle twitches.
I compare guilt to electricity. A little can be a good thing, like heating our homes or warming our food. But too much can literally kill you.
A little bit of guilt can keep you on the path of integrity and honesty. But too much can cause you to lose control of your own life. When you make decisions and live your life totally to please others, you will live a life of regret. Be aware of these signs, reflect on their meaning, and by all means, release the stress of guilt, worry, and shame.
