Your spiritual life can be buoyed up by a day at the beach. Spiritual growth can wash over you just by sitting by the ocean’s shore reflecting on LIFE.
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE BEACH?
Life is as unpredictable as the waves. The calm quiet lull of the water can instantaneously be crashed by the deafening roar of a thrashing breaking wave upon the sand. One second, still, and in a nano-second, the din of the pounding water. So too with life! We get lulled into the comfortable rhythm of our everyday activities thinking that things will always be the same. Then, unannounced and without warning, the rug is pulled out from under us. We lose our bearings and equilibrium tossing “normal” aside, being swept up into chaos.
Life is gradual as the tide. The water seems to creep up to my towel. Little by little the tide turns, and if you fall asleep basking in the sun, you will get a “wet awakening”. So too with life. It seems like growth is never on a straight non-stop path. Life is made up of small “victories”…two steps forward, one step back. Don’t panic, it’s the natural rhythm of life.
Life is as mysterious as the ocean. The calm open expanse of the far reaching waters project an image of a blue-glass silent invitation into a reflective stillness. In reality, if you don your scuba gear you will experience a whole different ocean environment, bursting with activity. So too with life. What we see…what we experience is on one level. You might call it a more superficial level. Something deeper is lurking and luring you beyond the obvious. Put on your gear of meditation or change your eyesight and you will see that there is a whole other world of this life. Go deeper, like in the ocean, to decipher the bigger meaning. We must dig deep to excavate where are life experiences are REALLY taking us.
As I close my eyes soaking up the warmth of the sun, I hear a balancing boarder call out, “This is harder than it looks!”. And so it is!
